Tips for Writing and Working at Home

Many people are choosing to work from home. It saves them money and has been shown to make workers happier. The work-from-home culture has been facilitated by tools that enable one to check in with team mates.

 

There are however, challenges in working at home. These include distractions by domestic duties and children, besides having a friend drop in unexpectedly. Experts have developed pointers on how to work at home efficiently.

 

Know what needs to be done and ensure you do it. One needs to develop a list of what needs to be done in a day and ensure that the tasks are completed. Interruptions do not matter if the chores are completed.

 

 

Dress as if you are gong to work. A regular routine of showering and dressing as if one is going to office helps. The preparations create an office atmosphere at home and remind you that you are working even as you sit on your sofa.

 

Keep friends away. It is advisable to use lunch time or weekends to meet with friends. Those who show up at your home unexpectedly should be told that you are working. It is important to have rules and to enforce them.

 

Create a stoplight for family members. Tape a sign to the workplace door to show when you can or cannot be disturbed.

 

Create a comfortable office. It is important to have a comfortable work place. Investing in a comfortable desk chair will make one more inclined to work. Other incentives could be a sofa, a bookshelf or a rug.

 

Store the work in a cloud. Vital documents need to be uploaded to a cloud storage server e.g. DropBox or Google Drive. This facilitates working from anywhere without fretting whether you have the necessary files or not.

 

Establish your working hours. Tape your working time schedule on the door to your home office and stick to them. Voicemail can be used to indicate hours of operation and to refer personal calls to your residence phone.

 

Pretend to be away from home. Ignore the home phone or the door bell during working hours to maintain focus.

 

Keep out of the kitchen. Discipline is needed to avoid frequent visits to the fridge in order to do what needs to get done.  This is similar to the discipline needed to keep away your drop-in pals.

 

Never go to personal appointments in the middle of the day. Doctor and dentist appointments should be first thing in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid work disruptions.

 

Get time to meet with co-workers face-to-face. It is advisable to meet and engage with team mates to discuss ideas. In-person time with colleagues produces more than you can get from conference calls or video calls.

 

Go out of the house. Some prefer working out of coffee shops. Leaving the house helps to separate work time and personal time.

 

 

Enjoy distractions. Some people work at home to be their own bosses. It is good to live life and see people who drop by unless of course you have a deadline to meet. Unscheduled breaks can make you work better.

 

Enjoy flexibility. When your focus starts wavering enjoy bike riding, swimming or even quit for a day. Time away from work can boost your creative juices.

Check in with colleagues and the boss regularly. This helps to let people at the office know that you are working and not shopping or watching TV. You could also keep your webcam on to show co-workers you are at your desk working all day.

The thought of becoming a full-time stay-at-home mom is daunting for most women. They are confused when they quit their normal jobs and officially become stay-at-home moms. They need to figure out how to manage the children and at the same time carry out a myriad of household chores that include cooking, teaching, disciplining and shopping among others. Here are a few pointers that can ease the life of a stay-at-home mom.

 

 

  • Plan the night before. It is no use waking up and trying to figure out how to fill the day. Failure to plan means that you might end up running around fire-fighting the whole day. Planning the next day when the children are sleeping is a must.

 

  • Get time outdoors. Staying at home fulltime will make you and the children go mad. The house will also be a mess. Ensure you get fresh air, do some shopping and see new faces.

 

  • Ensure you know all free activities in your area. Scout for playgrounds in the vicinity and check out the libraries. There are many opportunities when you will not have to anything but take videos of your children.

 

  • Network with other stay-at-home moms. Most of them are in the same situation as you are. Talking to SAHMs means you can fix play-dates to distract the children so that you can engage in an adult conversation

 

  • Exercise. This is not necessarily to enable you to stay skinny or in shape; it is to give you time to think It will be worth it to pay a babysitter to get time to exercise. If you do not you will have no time to think which leads to having trouble sleeping, being stressed and making your children unhappy.

 

  • Get time to do what you want at least once a week. There are no off days for SAHMs, no sick days or lunch breaks. It is a full time job. Leave the children with a babysitter and go for coffee or a drive. Get a manicure and do not fret about it. Your children need a break as much as you do.

 

  • Don’t be a stickler to rules. You can break any rules you wish as you are the boss. Allow the kids to stay in pajamas all day if they wish. You can give school a miss and go to a kid museum. Children are wise, listen to them and live in the moment.

 

  • Make the most of the time you spend with your kids. The children will grow up or you will return to work. Be a child again. Play and try not to fret about cleaning or cooking. You will never regret it

 

A 2007 survey by Pew Research Center showed that more mothers, (48 percent) preferred being home full time than 10 years earlier (39 percent). Buddhism

Buddhism is a religion that can be traced to India between the 4th and 6th centuries. It includes various traditions, spiritual practices and customs that come from the teachings of Buddha. Although found in many early Buddhist books, the details of the life of the founder, Siddhārtha Gautama, are however inconsistent, with his origins difficult to prove and precise dates uncertain.

 

Spread of the religion in Asia

 

 

The religion of Buddhism spread from India to the rest of Asia but started to decline in that country during the Middle Ages. Religious scholars recognize two main branches of Buddhism, mainly Theravada (The School of Elders) and Mahayana (Sanskrit for “The Great Vehicle”). With over 500 million adherents or 7 per cent of the global population, Buddhism is recognized as the fourth-largest religion in the world.

 

Buddhist schools vary on the precise nature of the path to liberation, the substance and principles of the different teachings and their practice. The methods of Buddhism include seeking shelter in the Buddha, the Sangha and the Dharma, study of the teachings, following of moral rules, abandonment of needs and attachment, methods of meditation (that includes calmness and insight), search for wisdom and compassion and loving-kindness There are also differences in the observance of the general and completion stages of the bodhicita and Vajrayana teachings from the Mahayana practice.

 

In Theravada the goal is the ending of kleshas (the mental states that befuddle the mind and bring about objectionable actions), and the accomplishment of the transcendent state of Nirvana, attained by following the Noble Eightfold Path (also called the Middle Way), which facilitates escape from the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Theravada has many followers in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka.

 

Mahayana which includes the teachings of Zen, Pure Land and Nichiren Buddhism among others is found throughout East Asia. It seeks to achieve Buddhahood through the bodhisattva way that seeks a state where one stays within the cycle of rebirth to help awaken other beings, rather than seeking Nirvana.

 

 

Vajrayana, which comprises teachings from Indian Siddhas, is the third branch or part of Mahayana. Tibetan Buddhism is practiced in regions surrounding Mongolia, the Himalayas, and Kalmykia. It maintains the Vajrayana teachings of 8th century India that seek Buddhahood or rainbow body.

 

Buddhist teachings comprise five basic behavioral and ritual guidelines for normal followers and those living in monasteries. These are:

 

  • Abstinence from killing
  • Abstinence from stealing
  • Abstinence from sensual misbehaviour
  • Abstinence from lying
  • Abstinence from intoxicants

 

Although the guidelines are not commandments and contraventions do not invite religious punishment, their power lies is in the Buddhist belief in karmic outcomes and their impact in afterlife during rebirth.

 

Buddhists who live in monasteries cut all social links to family and community. The monks live in a fraternity known as Sangha, with each such community having its own rules. The guidelines are not merely the means but are almost the end itself. Punishment for disobeying the rules may invite temporary or permanent expulsion from the Sangha.
